We're in New Zealand on Waitangi Day, so what better way to spend the day by being welcomed to this lovely country by a pōwhiri and eating a hāngi lunch?
Today I learned that New Zealand was once like Australia — they used to celebrate their national day on a day in late January when Britain declared a colony in NZ. Then they moved on and started celebrating the date of the Treaty of Waitangi instead of the date of colonisation, so now they can celebrate coming together instead of celebrating one side's rule. We should too in Australia.
